Art as Transformation
Artist Statement and brief biography of artists Diane
Hoff-Rome and Gordon B. Dobbie.
Both their individual and collaborative paintings express the
painting language of two artists who take risks from the heart and
mind: "Our vision is continually transformed through our painting!".
Their mediums include acrylics, watercolor, pastels, collage and
mixed media.
Born in Scotland, Gordon came to Massachusetts as a young boy and
has painted since he was in college (Gordon also carves in wood and
creates metal sculpture). A graduate of Tufts University with a
BSME, his painting is influenced by contemporary musicians such as
Dylan, Lennon, Young, Mayall, Mitchell and Van Morrison and painters
Diebenkorn, Avery, Van Gogh, Monet and Rothko.
Diane,
a native of Massachusetts, also enjoys a home on the Isle of Skye,
Scotland. Brought up in a family of artists, writers and musicians,
she has been immersed in the arts since childhood. An alumna of
Bennington College and Boston University's School of Fine Arts, she
holds a BFA and MFA in painting with a minor in creative
writing.
Diane also constructs assemblages, is an avid nature photographer
and also writes poetry and short stories. She studied painting with
the late Kenneth Callahan and Philip Guston; and admires O'Keefe, Frankenthaler, Hartung, Rembrandt, Matisse, Monet,
Deibenkorn, Hockney, and Ansel Adams; writers Sorley Maclean, Dylan
Thomas, W.B.Yeats and Anna Akhmatova. Folk, blues, classical music
and opera also inspire Diane's work.
French journalist Chantal Tochou wrote "Artists with Diane...
express themselves freely with color which sings with love...".
